The Peninsula Network of Mental Health Clients (PNMHC) was formed in 1986, and is similar to the many other successful self-help networks in the Bay Area who are seeking a voice for the mentally ill.
The major task of PNMHC is to be effective in changing attitudes, influencing public policy, developing self-help groups, and working to actualize negative experiences into a positive force for change.
Our three facilities offer social activities, classes and special interest projects for individuals interested in participating in group activities that foster and stimulate socialization. All three facilities are staffed completely by consumers who offer unique and personal insights into mental illness.
Our Goals:
- To establish services and advocacy in San Mateo County consumers can turn to for assistance.
- To work toward the elimination of barriers in communication, education and employment.
- To promote and support the improvement in the quality of life for the mentally ill.
- To reach out to the general public with programs that promote understanding toward people with mental illness.
- To provide on-going support services which aid people with a mental illness who are determined to realize all of the opportunities available to them.
Consumer-run self-help services:
- Are for all ages and races, from all social and economic backgrounds.
- Are run by the people who use them.
- Respect consumers as people not patients.
- Let participants define their own needs.
- Are completely voluntary.
- Share power, skills and responsibility among participants.
